Why is it important for elderly people to get engaged in sports?
Grand Gate ball tournament for elderly people.
Over 600 elderly people gathered at Anjo-Sogo Koen last October 4, 2013. It was an early morning as usual I parked my car near the park. It was early to go to the office and I have had decided to take a walk for a while when I noticed that there were many elderly people gathered together near the stadium. I walked to that direction and closely observed them. I felt some kind of happiness seeing these elderly people having fun and happily talking at each other. As I got nearer and nearer I took some snap shot of them then I finally found myself standing beside the fence of the baseball stadium.
An old man approached me , I thought he will be mad because I was not invited in that activity. My presence could have caught some of their attention because I was the only young person in that field. He started to talked as I greeted him " Ohayou gozaimasu! " and he replied. In my thought ," He's probably surprise to see a young foreigner watching them closely. I took this opportunity to asked him what was going on? He told me that every year during autumn season they usually held a tournament twice a year for the elderly people who love to play gate-ball " ge-to boru " in japanese. That season's participants reached a number of more or less 600 people , all resides in Anjo-shi. I was so surprised to see that number of old people who were still active in sports.
